Plein Air in Marengo, IL

I was able to spend the day with Jim Pavelec doing some plein air painting. We headed up to his in-laws place in Woodstock, IL. On the way he reminded me that it was the town where they filmed Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. We headed west to scope out some barns or a creek.

Even though we were in a rural area, it still felt like it was busy and we wouldn’t be able to just paint anywhere we wanted. This was mainly due to where we could park my truck without causing problems with the law or residents. We found a great location right across from a nursery farm. We asked if we could park in their lot so we wouldn’t cause a problem on the side of the road and the nice folks let us know we weren’t welcome.

We headed further west following the river to see if there was anywhere we could find a decent location for us. We opted in the end for an old barn by a bean field and got busy painting before we lost the morning light altogether.

Sounds like a fun little adventure. Beautiful work. Inspires me to do some plein air myself.
